How the car theory test works

The theory test for a car licence has two parts, booked and taken together: multiple-choice questions and hazard perception. Here is what each part involves, with a link to GOV.UK for every figure.

Part 1: multiple-choice questions

A question appears on screen with several possible answers, and you select the right one. Some questions are based on a short video.

Part 2: hazard perception

You watch video clips of everyday road scenes and score points for spotting developing hazards as soon as they start to happen.

Before and after the test

Who can sit the test, and how long a pass lasts.

Minimum age

17: you can take the theory test from your 17th birthday. In some cases (the higher rate of the mobility part of PIP) you can take it from 16.

Pass certificate

Valid for 2 years. You must pass your driving test in that time.

Fee

You must pass both parts

The two parts are one test. If you fail either part, you book and take the whole test again, even the part you passed.
